The Future of CoGe

The upcoming new macOS release - 10.15 aka Catalina - is around the corner and many of you asked us already about the future of CoGe.

This new OS release deprecates Quartz Composer and OpenGL, technologies CoGe has been built on. Deprecation does not mean those technologies suddenly stops working, but they won't be supported anymore. These would be the smaller problem, but Catalina also drops support for 32bit applications, and CoGe is a 32bit application, built on 32bit only technologies like Quicktime. So the bad news is, CoGe - as you now know it - won't be supported on macOS 10.15 Catalina.

But here comes the good news: these changes did not happen suddenly, we know this will be happening sooner or later, so we are already working on CoGeVJ 2.0 for a while now, and it should be around early next year. We don't want to share so much details about it for now, but the future looks familiar, great and of course 64bit! :)

Update (12/15/2020): development is going really slow on the update unfortunately, so we have to delay the release. We are planning to post a more depth update on how development is going on, what is done and what you can expect early 2021. Thank you for your patience!

Update (02/18/2020): so while moving forward with development we needed to make some tough decisions, like moving the rendering engine to Metal. This is a huge amount of work, but makes CoGeVJ 2.0 a better, faster and more future-safe product. We are expecting a public beta to be available around the 2nd half of the year. Thanks for your patience!

So, in a nutshell:

  • CoGe 1.x won't be supported on macOS 10.15 Catalina, so best to not upgrade your OS if you work with CoGe.
  • CoGeVJ 2.0 is coming and it will be supported by macOS 10.15 Catalina. It will be a free update for everyone who purchased CoGe in 2018 or later.
